From Proto-Finnic *hoopa, borrowed from Proto-Norse *ᚦᛟᛒᛟ (*þōbō), from Proto-Germanic *þōbô, whence Old Norse þófi (“felt”). Cognate with Ingrian hoopa, Karelian huopa, Veps hob.
