==== Usage notes ====
This term is chiefly used in two-party systems, or in systems where there are two major political parties.
In multiparty systems it is unusual that a single party would obtain a majority of the seats in the legislature. The term may still be used, however, when there are two firm blocs of parties and neither of these wins a majority.
