From Proto-Finnic *hukta, probably borrowed from Proto-Iranian [Term?] (compare Persian سوختن (sôxtan, “to burn”)). Related also to Erzya чувто (čuvto, “tree”), Moksha шуфта (šufta, “tree”), but these were probably borrowed separately from the same source.
