From Old Swedish hugormber, from Old Norse hǫggormr (“a serpent”). Equivalent to hugga + orm. Cognates include Icelandic höggormur (“a poisonous snake, a serpent”). Compare Old Norse hǫgg (“a stroke, a weapon's blow”) and ormr (“a snake, a serpent; a worm; a dragon”).
