From Middle Dutch hôvetman, from Old Dutch hōvitman, from Proto-West Germanic *haubidamann (“leader; captain, head of a group,” literally “head or main person”). Cognate with German Hauptmann, Low German Hööftmann, and Old English hēafodmann. Equivalent to hoofd- + man.
