Derived from an unattested verb *hlacerian, from Proto-West Germanic *hlakarōn (“to make fun of”), an iterative form of Proto-West Germanic *hlakōn, *hlakkōn (“to laugh”), from Proto-Germanic *hlakkōną (“to laugh”). Cognate with Old Frisian hlakkia, hlakia (“to laugh”), Old Norse hlakka (“to shout for joy, squeal, scream, screech”).
