From Proto-Finnic *hirnudak, of onomatopoeic origin. Cognates include Finnish hirnua and Estonian hirnuda.
The sense "to laugh" is an innovation, but is also present in colloquial Finnish hirnua. Compare also colloquial Russian ржать (ržatʹ).
