Borrowed from Late Latin hippocampus (“sea horse”), from Ancient Greek ἱππόκαμπος (hippókampos, “sea horse, hippocamp”, from ἵππος (híppos, “horse”) + κάμπος (kámpos, “sea monster”)), describing a mythological creature with a horse's forepart and a fishlike hindquarter.
