Borrowed from Malay intai (“prying; watching secretly”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *hintay (“to wait for; to spy on”). Also possibly from hin- + antay, with elision of the first syllable of the root. Compare Malay intai, Iban intai, Toba Batak inte, Old Javanese inte / intay, Balinese inte, Sasak inte.
