Inherited from Ottoman Turkish حكمت (ḥikmet, “an ultimate occult cause or motive for existence or occurrence, a point of knowledge, a system of philosophy, science”), from Arabic حِكْمَة (ḥikma, “wisdom, knowledge, philosophy”), verbal noun of حَكُمَ (ḥakuma, “to be wise, to establish solidly”).
