Apparently from Middle High German *hiewesic, from Middle High German hie, hī (“here”, adverb) + Middle High German *wesic (“being”), as in Middle High German abewesic (“absent”), selpwesic (“intrinsic, essential”), etc. Equivalent to hie (“here”) + wesend + -ig.
