Derived from hieta, either as hieta + -ikka (< *hiedikka), or as a blend of hieta + hiukka; may be influenced by hiukka in any case. Originally primarily an Eastern Finnish word; considered Savonian by Juslenius (1745). Cognate with Karelian hiekka and Livvi hiekku.
