=== Etymology ===
From Proto-Finnic *hëpoinën, roughly equivalent to hepo + -(i)nen (diminutive suffix). The weak grade -v- originates from the southwestern dialects, while the expected strong-grade heponen is only found in dialects, mainly in the southeast. Compare cognates in other Finnic languages such as Estonian hobune, Karelian hepoine. See hepo, *hëpo for further etymology.
