From the original form háta (“its back”) + hupás (“uneven”), from hát (“back”) + -a (“its”, possessive suffix) + hup- (same stem as in huppan) + -a (obsolete present-participle suffix) + -s (adjective-forming suffix). Form development: hátahupás > hápahupás > hepehupás.
