hecto-

التعريفات والمعاني

== English == === Alternative forms === hect- (before a vowel) === Etymology === From French hecto-, from Ancient Greek ἑκατόν (hekatón, “hundred”). Doublet of hecato- and centi-. === Pronunciation === === Prefix === hecto- hundred Synonyms: centi-, hecato- In the International System of Units and other metric systems of units, multiplying the unit to which it is attached by 100. Symbol: h ==== Usage notes ==== Usually this prefix for "× 102" is intentionally not used in scientific contexts, in favor of either "× 100" or "× 103" instead. For example, "1 hm" (one hectometre) will usually be written instead as either "100 m" or "0.1 km". This fact is directly related to the preference for engineering notation as a subset of scientific notation that is especially useful mathematically. It favors groups of cubes (× 103). ==== Derived terms ==== ==== Translations ==== === Further reading === “hecto-”, in OneLook Dictionary Search. === Anagrams === cothe == Dutch == === Etymology === From French hecto-, from Ancient Greek ἑκατόν (hekatón, “hundred”). === Pronunciation === === Prefix === hecto- hecto- == French == === Pronunciation === === Prefix === hecto- hecto- ==== Derived terms ==== === Further reading === “hecto-”, in Trésor de la langue française informatisé [Digitized Treasury of the French Language], 2012 == Portuguese == === Prefix === hecto- hecto- (hundred) ==== Derived terms ==== === Further reading === “hecto-”, in Dicionário Aulete Digital (in Portuguese), Rio de Janeiro: Lexikon Editora Digital, 2008–2026 “hectolitro” in Dicionário Aberto based on Novo Diccionário da Língua Portuguesa de Cândido de Figueiredo, 1913 “hecto-”, in Dicionário Priberam da Língua Portuguesa (in Portuguese), Lisbon: Priberam, 2008–2026 == Romanian == === Prefix === hecto- hecto- ==== Derived terms ==== === Further reading === “hectolitru”, in DEX online—Dicționare ale limbii române (Dictionaries of the Romanian language) (in Romanian), 2004–2026 == Spanish == === Etymology === Borrowed from French hecto-, from Ancient Greek ἑκατόν (hekatón, “hundred”). === Prefix === hecto- hecto- (hundred) ==== Derived terms ==== === Further reading === “hecto-”, in Diccionario de la lengua española [Dictionary of the Spanish Language] (in Spanish), online version 23.8.1, Royal Spanish Academy [Spanish: Real Academia Española], 15 December 2025
