From Proto-Finnic *haltija(s), borrowed from Proto-Norse *ᚺᚨᛚᛞᛁᛃᚨᛉ (*haldijaʀ, “holder”). The -ija in the modern spelling is by influence from -ja (and words derived with it). Cognate with Estonian haldjas.
