Borrowed from New Latin halogenium, from Swedish halogen, both coined by Jöns Jakob Berzelius, a Swedish chemist. Formed from Ancient Greek ἅλς (háls, “salt”) + -geen (“produce”), referring to elements which produce a salt in union with a metal.
