== Old English == === Alternative forms === haftian, hafetiġan, afetiġan, hafeċiġan, hafitiġan, hafitian === Etymology === Uncertain. Perhaps an alteration of hafettan, from Proto-West Germanic *habattjan, from Proto-West Germanic *hab, *habu (“lift, lifting”) + *-attjan; or derived from the related noun *hafet, from Proto-West Germanic *habati, from Proto-Germanic *habatją (“a lifting, an elevating”), equivalent to *hafet +‎ -ian. Alternatively, an alteration of āfētian (“to stomp with the feet, applaud, praise”). Possibly a merger of both theories. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈxɑ.fe.ti.ɑn/, [ˈhɑ.ve.ti.ɑn] === Verb === hafetian to applaud, clap to beat; (birds) to flap ==== Conjugation ==== ==== Synonyms ==== āfētian fæġnian pleġan þamettan ==== Related terms ==== hafettan ūpāhafu
