Sino-Vietnamese word from 合眾國, composed of 合 (“united”), 眾 (“masses”) and 國 (“country; state”), from Chinese 合眾國 / 合众国 (hézhòngguó). The exact etymology is unclear.
The 眾 / 众 (“the masses”) (Japanese 衆 (shū)) might have been a misinterpretation of Japanese 州 (shū, châu, “province; state”), thus a literal "united states"
合眾 / 合众 (literally “the united masses”) or 眾國 / 众国 (literally “states of the masses”) might convey something similar to 共和 (gònghé, “republican (states)”), thus a "united republican states"
