From hús (“meat”) + vét (“taking”), from vesz (“to take”) + -t (noun-forming suffix). The origin of the meaning is that meat could be consumed only after Lent, starting at Easter. The evolution of the Hungarian word may have been influenced by Southern Slavic words, compare Serbo-Croatian Vuzem.
