From Middle Welsh gwawt, from Proto-Brythonic *gwọd, from Proto-Celtic *wātis (compare Gaulish uatis, Old Irish fáith (“seer, prophet”), from Proto-Indo-European *wéh₂tis, from *weh₂t- (“possessed, excited”). Cognate with Latin vātēs and Proto-Germanic *wōdaz (“mad”).
