== English == === Etymology === Named after Edmund Gunter, English mathematician and geometer. Compare Gunter's chain. For the surname, see Gunter. === Noun === gunter (plural gunters) (sailing) A device used in sailing, for two main configurations of rig: A wire that leads from a point near the end of a gaff to a point near the other end. A block travels along this wire, and a halyard is attached to the block. This allows the gaff to be raised to the vertical by a single halyard.
