Borrowed from Gaulish *gulbiā, from Proto-Celtic *gulb- (whence also the further suffixed *gulbīnos (“beak, bill”); compare Middle Irish gulba (“beak, jaw”), Welsh gylfin (“beak”)), probably of non-Indo-European origin, and not related to Proto-Indo-European *gelbʰ- (“to flay, scrape”).
