grávido
التعريفات والمعاني
== Portuguese ==
=== Etymology ===
Learned borrowing from Latin gravidus.
=== Pronunciation ===
Rhymes: -avidu
Hyphenation: grá‧vi‧do
=== Adjective ===
grávido (feminine grávida, masculine plural grávidos, feminine plural grávidas)
pregnant, gravid
(usually humorous) having something growing or swelling inside
==== Usage notes ====
Usually used in reference to humans, whereas prenhe is more commonly used for animals.
Because this lexeme is almost always used in reference to female humans, the masculine form is very rare compared to grávida. Circumstances in which it is used include:
Talking about hypothetical or non-situations;
With medical terms for parts of the body involved in pregnancy, such as útero (“uterus”), corpo (“body”) and abdômen (“abdomen”);
In jokes and pranks;
Talking about animals whose names are always masculine. There are many such names, however, the lexeme prenhe is usually used for animals instead of grávido/a;
With words that are masculine but refer to a female;
With the semantically neuter but grammatically masculine pronouns alguém (“someone”) and ninguém (“no one”);
In reference to men whose significant other is pregnant, or to the couple (casal m);
In reference to trans men.
