From *ǵh₂r-, zero grade of Proto-Indo-European *ǵeh₂r- (“to shout, call”).
Cognate with Old English caru (“sorrow”), Latin garriō (“chatter”), Ancient Greek γῆρυς (gêrus, “voice, speech”), Khotanese [script needed] (ysār-, “to sing”).
Arguably related to Old Norse garmr (“dog”) and Sanskrit घर्घर (gharghara, “crackling, rattling”).
