Inherited from Proto-Slavic *gonìti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gánīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰon-éye-ti, from *gʷʰen- (“to slay, strike”), whence English fend; defend; offend. Cognate with Lithuanian ganýti (“to graze”), Ancient Greek θείνω (theínō, “to slay”) and Sanskrit हन्ति (hanti, “to slay”).
