golyóbis

=== Etymology ===
Borrowed from Latin globus (“sphere, globe”). It developed through breaking up of the initial consonant cluster and palatalization of l > ly. The Latin suffix -us regularly became Hungarian ‑is ~ ‑ics, compare grádics. In modern usage, the similar-sounding but etymologically unrelated golyó has supplanted golyóbis. First attested in 1493.
