Possibilities include: Scriban argues that the term is related to grăunte or grunț, both meaning “grain; kernel”. Per Skok, the term is from borrowed from Serbo-Croatian glonta (“bullet”), which he derives from German Flinte (“little rifle”). Per Cihac, the term is borrowed from Hungarian golyócs (“pellet”) or galacs (“clump”). Ciorănescu disagrees with the above theories and instead proposes an expressive nature based on its derivatives, suggesting the Serbo-Croatian and Hungarian words are borrowings from Romanian.
