From Middle High German gelöubec, geloubec, from Old High German giloubīg. Equivalent to Glaube or glauben + -ig. Compare Dutch gelovig.
While the verb was standardised with Upper German vocalism, the adjective continues the Central German form with umlaut against southern glaubig (cf. also abergläubisch).
