== Albanian == === Alternative forms === gluhë — obsolete, now Cham, Arbëresh, Arvanitika gjuhu — obsolete, Gheg gjuhunë, gjuhënë — Gheg guhë — northern Gheg gû — dialectal, Kosovo gju — Borgo Erizzo gëluhë — Sicily gjufë — Calabria glufë — Mandrica === Etymology === Unclear. From Old Albanian gluhë, most likely from Proto-Albanian *glu.a, with sporadic intervocalic loss of b (see pi, det, and dra) and insertion of a hiatus-like h (see bahe, kohë, and pah), from Pre-Proto-Albanian *glubā- ("tip"), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵlubʰah₂- (“point”). A loan from Ancient Greek γλῶσσα (glôssa) is improbable from a linguistic and cultural standpoint, as Ancient Greek loans involved terms of trade and agriculture, not body parts, and a Proto-Albanian derivation would have been *gluśa, phonetically improbable. === Pronunciation === (northern Tosk, Lab) IPA(key): /ˈɟuhə/ (southern Gheg, central Gheg) IPA(key): [ˈɟ͡ʝũːh] (northern Gheg) IPA(key): [ˈɡjuː(h)], [ˈɡuː(h)] (Kosovo) IPA(key): [ˈɡũː] (Cham, Arvanitika, Arbëresh) IPA(key): [ˈɡʎuhə] (Calabria) IPA(key): [ˈɡʎuɣə] Rhymes: -uhə === Noun === gjuhë f (plural gjuhë or (dialectal) gjuhëra / gjuhëna, definite gjuha) tongue (organ) gjuhë lope e zier ― boiled beef tongue (figurative) speech, talking Synonym: gojë strip of land Synonym: rrip bell clapper, clanger, tongue Synonym: gjuhëz language, tongue gjuha shqipe ― the Albanian language register, speech, style Synonyms: ligjërim, stil gjuha e fëmijëve ― children speech gjuhë e trashë ― foul language gjuha e shkrimtarit ― the author's style language (generally, any form of communication) gjuha e muzikës ― music's language gjuha e bletëve ― bees' language (colloquial) local dialect Synonyms: e folme, dialekt (colloquial) Albanian, as a subject in school ==== Declension ==== ==== Derived terms ==== === References === “gjúh/ë,~a”, in FGJSSH: Fjalor i gjuhës së sotme shqipe [Dictionary of the modern Albanian language]‎[1], 1980, page 625f.
