From Old Swedish gislan (noun), from gisla (verb), from Old Norse gísl, from Proto-Norse ᚨᛊᚢᚷᛁᛊᚨᛚᚨᛊ (asugisalas), from *ᚷᛁᛊᛚᚨᛉ (*gislaʀ), from Proto-Germanic *gīslaz (“hostage”).
Cognate of Danish gidsel, Icelandic gísl, Middle Low German gīsel, German Geisel, Old English ġīsel. Compare Old Irish gíall (“hostage”).
