From Proto-Baltic *gil- (compare Latvian dziļš (“deep”)), of unknown further origin. Various proposed theories, including those relating the word to Proto-Indo-European *gʷelH- (“to hurt, stab”) (whence gélti (“to ache, sting, bite”) and Proto-Germanic *kwelaną (“to suffer, hurt”)), are semantically difficult. Related to gelmė̃ (“deep spot; depth”).
