From Sumerian 𒌋 (giguru), from 𒄀 (gi, “reed”) + 𒄥 (gur, “to turn”) + 𒀀 (a, nominalizing suffix), literally “reed stylus turned around”, indicating the antecedent of the sign 𒌋, a circular hole made with the butt end of the stylus.
