Inherited from Latin glomus, probably through a Vulgar Latin *glemus. Or altered within Romanian from *ghiom > *ghiome (plural form) to *gheme and finally analogically back a singular. Compare Aromanian gljem, gljom. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gel- (“form into a ball; ball”).
