Verbal derivative of Middle High German heie (“hammer, club”), from Old High German heia, from Proto-Germanic *hajaną (“to pound”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kh₂ey- (“to hew”), possibly reanalyzed from *sekh₂- (“to cut”). Compare Luxembourgish Heel (“hoe”).
