Borrowed from Ancient Greek γέρδιος (gérdios), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵers- (“to twist; to plait”). See also Old Armenian ծառ (caṙ, “tree”), Ancient Greek γέρρον (gérrhon, “wattle-fence”) and Old Norse kjarr (“copsewood, brush-wood, thicket”).
