From Middle High German gel (inflected gelwe), from Old High German gelo, from Proto-West Germanic *gelu, from Proto-Germanic *gelwaz.
The form gelb is derived from the Middle High German inflected stem (as in herb), while the variant gehl is from the uninflected stem and from dialects that reduce -lw- to -l- in all positions (as in fahl, kahl). It survives in set phrases. Cognate with Dutch geel, Low German geel, English yellow.
