Onomatopoeic. Compare Latvian dzeguze (“cuckoo”) and Old Prussian geguse (“cuckoo”), the latter attested in the Elbing Vocabulary.
The "May" meaning is from the "cuckoo" meaning; cuckoos were associated with the month of May in pagan times, perhaps as the month when they most flourished.
