=== Etymology ===
Possibly from Proto-Balto-Slavic *galas, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelH- (ablauted to *gʷol-).
Cognates: Lithuanian gãlas (“id.”), Old Prussian gallan (acc.), golis (“death”), Old Norse kveld (“evening, end of the day”), etc. The meaning 'death' probably evolved from 'stab' > 'kill' (galināt, nogalināt 'to kill'); the same development is seen in Proto-West Germanic *kwalm, also from *gʷol-. From 'stab', also probably 'tip' > 'end'.
