Originally a western Swedish pronunciation of gott (“good, well”) (neuter form of god), with western Swedish vowel fronting /ɔ/ > /œ/, sometimes represented with a circumflex ⟨ô⟩, compare gör-, knö, and tjöta. It has since spread to other parts of Sweden and often has a slightly different usage than gott.
