From Old Norse frœði, from Proto-Germanic *frōdį̄. By surface analysis, fróður (“knowledgeable”) + -i n (abstract noun suffix), or respectively + -i f (abstract noun suffix). Cognate to Faroese frøði, Swedish frode, and Middle High German vruote.
