From Middle Irish fothromm, alteration of fothronn, from Proto-Celtic *uɸo-toranos (literally “sub-thunder”); compare Middle Welsh godaran (“noisy, clamorous”). The change from -nn to -m may have been influence from fuaim (“sound”) or trom (“heavy”).
