== English == === Etymology === Origin obscure, but apparently akin to Scots forlegen, forlagen (“utterly worn out, completely exhausted”), Danish and Norwegian forlegen (“embarrassed, perplexed”), Dutch verlagen (“abashed, degraded, soiled, abased”), equivalent to for- +‎ lain.
