التعريفات والمعاني
== Swedish ==
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): [fjɛlː]
=== Etymology 1 ===
From Old Swedish fiäl, from Old Norse fjall, from Proto-Germanic *falisaz, from *pels-, *pelis-. Cognate with Icelandic fjall, Faroese fjall, Norwegian fjell, German Fels (“rock”), English fell.
==== Noun ====
fjäll n
a mountain rising above the tree line (in the Nordic countries)
Synonym: (mountain, generally) berg
===== Usage notes =====
Usually only of mountains rising above the tree line in the Nordic countries, usually as part of the Scandinavian Mountains / Scandes range (Skanderna), but also of mountains in Iceland, for example. Mountains in other countries are called berg. For comparison, Norwegian fjell is used of mountains anywhere. Mount Everest is a fjell in Norwegian, for example.
Regionally of lower mountains (that are more or less barren or wild and desolate), especially in Bohuslän and Dalsland. See for example Bredfjället in Bohuslän.
The Scandinavian Mountains are usually simply referred to as fjällen (the mountains) in Swedish, normally implying the Swedish parts, which can also be qualified as "svenska fjällen" (the Swedish mountains). Skanderna sounds off in non-technical language.
Another geographically restricted term is älv (“river”) (and normally also å). Rivers outside the Nordic countries are called flod.
The obsolete plural fjällar survives in some poetry.
