Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries, from fél (“to be afraid”). Possibly coined by the analogy of verbs formed with the instantaneous suffix -eml(ik) (cf. szűr→ szüremlik etc.) + -ít (causative suffix).
