Inherited from Late Latin fontāna, from a substantivation of the adjective Latin fontānus, from fons. Developed phonologically in Romanian via assimilation from an earlier form *funtână (Attested in early 1900s Fărșerot Aromanian funtãnã). Compare to the more typical Aromanian fãntãnã, and also Sardinian fantana.
