From Middle High German ëtelich, Old High German ëtalīh. The first element is of obscure origin, but possibly related to Proto-Germanic *ehþau (“otherwise, or, but if”), source of modern oder (“or”). The second element is hwelīh (“which, each”). Compare etwas.
