Inherited from Old Spanish [Term?], probably from a Vulgar Latin *extronĭtus, from *tronĭtus, from metathesis of Latin tonitrus. Compare Portuguese estrondo. Doublet of tronido, which came from a variant with stress on the penultimate syllable (long -i-).
