Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ped-skuH-t-, from *ped- (“foot”) + *(s)kewH- (“to cover”); the former component is cognate with English foot, and the latter with Ancient Greek σκῦτος (skûtos, “skin, hide”). Direct cognate with Welsh esgid (“shoe”).
