esine

=== Etymology ===
esi- (“fore-”) + -ine. Coined by Finnish physician and translator Wolmar Schildt in 1842. Länsimäki (1989) theorizes that Schildt originally coined the word as esiaine (as a calque of Swedish föremål) and later shortened it to esine. Compare Estonian ese, also an intentional coinage and likely inspired by the Finnish word.
According to Häkkinen (2004), Schildt later preferred esile (with -le), but esine (which Schildt later thought sounded too similar to jalkine and käsine and thus like a term for clothing) remained in use.
